Talent management could be considered as a major HR function as it is the strategic process of acquiring, developing, retaining, and transitioning employees to help build an organization's culture, engagement, capability, and capacity. (www.paylocity.com, n.d.)
The main components of
talent management generally include workforce planning to identify current and
future talent needs, Recruiting and onboarding top talent which is required
specifically for the organization, providing learning and development
opportunities for the current and newly recruited employees, implementing proper
performance management and career development programs, designing competitive
compensation mechanisms and rewards systems, and also retaining and engaging
high-performing employees (www.paylocity.com, n.d.)
When it comes to effective
talent management, it is crucial for organizations to attract and retain top
talent to gain a competitive advantage, building a high performing, engaged,
and productive workforce, developing future leaders and ensuring leadership
continuity, aligning employee skills and capabilities with business goals and
finally fostering a positive organizational culture and employer brand (www.td.org,
n.d.).
There
are some significant challenges faced by organizations when acquiring top
talent. They are the difficulty finding skilled employees due to talent
shortages and a global skills gap, Increased competition for top talent,
especially with high employee turnover rates, need
to offer more attractive benefits, career development, and alignment with
employee values to recruit effectively (Anon, 2023). In order to
overcome these mentioned challenges, organizations could take necessary actions
too. Some of these actions could be promoting employees from within the organization
and investing in structured employee development to build a strong internal
talent pipeline, emphasizing employer branding, diversity, and inclusion
initiatives to be more appealling to top candidates across the industry and
also using data and technology to improve recruitment efficiency and reduce
bias would aid in overcoming these challenges (InStride, n.d.)
By addressing these key
talent management challenges through a strategic, data-driven, and
people-centric approach, organizations can build a sustainable competitive
advantage through their workforce.
