The good or bad relationships with the employer and the employees and also the efforts made by organizations to establish and sustain positive, constructive interactions within the workplace is simply referred to as the Employee Relations (Crail, 2023). When it comes to HRM, Employee Relations takes a critical place as it focuses mainly on building up positive relationships between the employer or the organization and the employees, fostering a sense of community, belonging and thereby improving overall employee satisfaction, engagement, and productivity (Personio, 2021). Additionally, Employee Relations consists of both vertical and horizontal relationships. Vertical Relationships mean the relationships between employees and their supervisors while horizontal relationships mean the relationship between peers (Crail, 2023).

Moreover, through employee relations it is expected to address employee conflicts, concerns or any potential issues in an unbiased, fair and constructive manner. And also, developing policies, programs, and strategies to support employees and their interests are expected to achieve through positive employee relations (Personio, 2021).

The main objectives of effective employee relations could be named as to improve employee retention, morale, and enhanced performance, creating a positive, collaborative, and constructive work environment and also to align the employees with the organizational culture, value system and objectives (Personio, 2021).

Some of the key responsibilities of employee relations include effective conflict resolution and unbiased mediation, developing and implementing workplace policies for effective employee relations, effective communication with the employees regarding their needs and addressing them (Personio, 2021). Apart from that, overseeing employee onboarding, training and development as employee exit procedure comes under employee relations too (Personio, 2021). Finally, promoting workplace health and safety as well as ensuring employee well-being is also a key responsibility of Employee relations.

In order to have effective employee relations, it is crucial to develop necessary skills such as active listening, effective communication and conflict management and HR professionals play a critical and the most important role in ensuring positive workplace employee relations (Pitt Law MSL Online Program (Live), 2023).
